Environment – Challenges and Solutions

September 5, 2015

By Padmini Arhant

PadminiArhant.com Recognition of Environment issue for Vishwa Kalyaan (VK) Award 2015.

There are far too many challenges with few steps against climate change.

The procrastination on climate treaty with effective policy from major contributors of pollution is a serious threat to humanity.

Any positive development requires collective actions for air and water are the two main elements enabling life on planet.

The blue sky and ocean are no longer clear with smoke clouds from carbon emission and repeat incidents of oil spills, subterranean nuclear testing, missile programs to strengthen nuclear capability inflicting massive damages to life and livelihoods in coastal areas and all around beyond recovery.

The global warming leading to ozone depletion in atmosphere affecting seasons and melting glaciers causing sea level to rise endangering marine lives with species becoming rare and extinct not to mention the ultimate impact on ecological balance.

Natural disasters cannot be assessed as natural and triggered by environment neglect and abuse ranging from off shore and shallow water drilling including hydro fracking for oil to mountain top removal in coal mining and other fossil fuel related excavations and explorations proved destructive.

The pursuits attributed to growing energy demand also tied to profitability like in coal mining industry with political members’ direct involvements as stakeholders raking huge financial gains ignore environment woes and options for renewal energy in particular.

Although there are many environment groups and organizations tirelessly engaged in containing industrial and political combined anti-environment undertakings, the greed motivated strategy continues unabated with little or no concern for apparent environment degradation.

The powerful energy sector – fossil fuel and nuclear industry despite catastrophic events viz. Fukushima prioritize political and economic opportunity at environment and population expense.

There is no doubt that energy is essential to fuel economy and maintain machine age.  However, the investments in natural sources like sun, wind and water that are in abundance somehow not appealing stifling alternative energy supply emergence.

In contrary procurement of fossil fuel especially oil desirable expending taxpayer funds in invasion and occupation of nations rich in oil and mineral resources leaving further economic, environment, political and social problems in the destinations.

The military interventions whether conventional or sponsoring terrorism to destabilize nations and regions with constant use of arsenals and explosives laden cluster munitions dropped in Yemen right now substituting land mines are devastating to victims – mostly children and other civilians in the war zone.

Wars around the world with overt and disguised use of nuclear components augment environment deterioration.

The trend funding political campaigns for vested interests form governments to suit donors’ agenda via legislations and disregard consequences exacerbating economy and environment.

Solutions to energy needs are divestments in alternative energyclean energy like solar, wind and hydropower projects suitable to vast majority of developed and developing nations in terms of affordability and minimum to zero maintenance in operation for end user.

The current dilemma to meet emerging economies energy demand could be addressed in promoting reduction in energy consumption with more awareness on the issue.

Small approach often eases the situation resulting in economic prudence.

The replacement of existing incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient light emitting diodes (LED) lights is incremental pace towards conservation.

The household appliances such as refrigerators, washer and dryer…and electronic devices conforming to low power absorption and high in performance would allow energy saving.  The consumer responsibility in adjusting usage and smart exercise equally important to decrease energy wastage.

Another critical measure is to broaden and modernize public transportation like buses, metros and subways for convenient access.

The campaign urging commuters to avail these facilities providing low fares as incentives would attract large numbers boosting revenue.

Traffic congestion and weak environment standards like absence of mandatory smog control in emerging economies is a health hazard with ripple effects on economy deterring tourism and business venture.

Recycling is an age old practice in developing nations serving as survival means for demography in impoverished and lower economic strata. The mechanism to operate recycling plant and waste management is yet to be fully developed and deployed for maximum benefit.

Water scarcity and distribution is ongoing global crisis. The harvesting and irrigation techniques in agriculture reaching farmers in near and remote areas is key to self-sufficiency and satisfying hunger.

In urban and rural areas –  water storage during monsoon and reutilization of water with investments in purification would minimize water shortage.

The wealthy states in the Middle East diversion from aiding terrorism to constructive projects like desalination would transform arid desert lands for cultivation.

Preserving rain forests and reefs in ocean beds from commercial activities is paramount for life linked with natural food pyramid.

Ordinarily planting trees and expanding greenery oxygenate surroundings in the nature designed conversion of carbon dioxide.

Summarizing on environment matter – setting targets on carbon emission and compliance on environment regulations in addition to departure from fossil fuel with commitment to natural energy – solar, wind and water sourced power is the gateway to free the world from oil dependency.

The nuclear energy evidently not always meant for civilian programs and deviation from the objective towards nuclear weapons status is the reason behind contemporary nuclear proliferation.

Again unless there is complete and comprehensive nuclear disarmament beginning with P5+1 and other nuclear states – the environment and biodiversitys face imminent risks with preference for confrontation over peaceful resolutions escalating global tensions and volatility.

Arriving at consensus on climate accord is incumbent on industrialized and emerging economies to release the burden on developing and island nations experiencing enormous losses due to extreme weather conditions and lack of technology as well as logistic support.

The environment awardees names for 2015 Vishwa Kalyaan (VK) Award i.e. Universal Benefit Award will be published subsequent to official declaration on recipients of Health category award.

Peace to all!

Thank you.

United States – White House Carbon Emissions Reduction Rule

August 4, 2015

By Padmini Arhant

President Barack Obama announcement on rule to curb green house gas pollution from power plants is a positive step and deserves national and international cooperation for formidable climate treaty.

The proposition targeting carbon emission from coal plants and automobile industry is one aspect of environment protection scheme.

However, environment hazards are multi-faceted and accordingly involve diverse industrial groups besides federal and state governments within nation.

United States energy consumption remaining significantly higher amongst industrialized nations, the variation in objectives and standard on containing and decreasing carbon emission across the country result in net negative trend and discrepancy in national tally in improving performance.

The plan encompassing basic formula applicable to all with necessary modifications depending on pollution output would be a viable option.

The White House anticipation in cutting carbon emission around 32% by 2030 alongside extending renewable energy from current 5% to 35% in that timeframe is feasible with efficient strategy across the spectrum for impact.

Unfortunately, the U.S. administration dual track in opposite directions confining specific fossil fuel division to environmental law while allowing access to oil companies for deep water drilling despite devastating experience creates huge credibility issue.

British Petroleum (BP) oil spill in Gulf of Mexico in 2010 continues to be major environment disaster.

Please double click and click again on the illustration to view content.

In the backdrop of environment catastrophe in continental shelf from offshore drillings, the Obama administration approval of Shell Corporation to drill in Arctic juxtaposed White House latest proposal on limiting carbon emission is a direct contradiction posing hindrance in environment goals.

The White House conflicting positions could deter potential achievements not only on lowering carbon emission but also in different areas related to environmental cause.

Furthermore, the existing environment conditions exacerbated from relentless warfare using artilleries, ammunitions, grenades, Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), landmines, chemical weapons against Syria, missiles in Yemen, Libya, nuclear component viz. depleted uranium in Iraq, white phosphorous in Gaza and drones in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Mali and Colombia…to name a few in contemporary practice.

The pragmatic approach to environment problems is to end conflicts in the Middle East, Central Asia, South East Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa and Latin America.

The death and destruction from conventional wars and terrorism has produced outbreaks of diseases controlled earlier spreading into neighboring parts of the region.

The warzones endure grave economic and environment woes with population facing serious health complications due to toxicity and contamination of water as well as air pollution from lethal weapons and terror operatives gross violations inflicting maximum damage.

United States led coalition funding and arming terror networks in Syria, Libya and Iraq contributing to massive casualties and bloodshed not to mention refugees in millions represent humanitarian and environment calamity.

Unless there is recognition to this effect amongst sponsors of terrorism and military interventions prompting them to ceasefire and permanent conclusion to wars, the measures towards environment programs would not have universal benefit.

Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Libya, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Africa, Latin America and oppressed citizens worldwide forced into perpetual suffering depriving them from normal existence.

Planet preservation to sustain life is no longer a choice but necessity with departure from military aggression and terror infiltration to destabilize nations for dominance.

Above all nuclear disarmament of P5+1 and remaining nuclear states is paramount to guarantee global peace and security in the immediate term and future.

The architects and catalysts promoting wars and terrorism together with opponents to environment laws share responsibility in denying safe and healthy habitat to inhabitants of earth.

Safeguarding environment is a collective duty with individual participation making life possible on earth.

Peace to all!

Thank you.

India – Jammu and Kashmir Flood Situation

September 20, 2014

The audio version of the text made available for citizens convenience and choice.  Your participation is appreciated.

By Padmini Arhant

The recent natural disaster in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir has claimed many lives besides severe damages to livelihoods, residents’ homes and public convenience in the capital Srinagar and several areas of the valley.

Whenever such calamity hits the territory, the death toll and destruction has significant impact on survivors and often paralyzes the system.

The Central and state authorities preparedness in crisis management and mitigation is subject to test and the failure leads to major hazards with much longer recovery time.

The flood victims in Srinagar and Jammu have suffered enormously considering the delay in initial response on rescue operation.

However, subsequent relief efforts are pertinent and maintaining humanitarian assistance also contain casualties emanating from water borne disease and lack of basic requirements during emergency situation.

The environment neglect and various activities to satisfy energy demands whilst refusing to consider solar, wind, hydro conductivity and other natural sources contribute to extreme weather conditions accompanied by human and economic losses for the state and the people.

Political decisions overriding evidence based facts on environmental matter and non-commitment towards climate treaty are contentious and attributed to inhabitants declining general health status.

Furthermore the absence of effective strategy towards carbon reduction and earth protection endanger life and planet sustenance.

The political authorities concerted steps to compete with other carbon emitters by expanding automobile manufacturing without smog control regulations and preventive actions affect air quality resulting in massive pollution.

Unfortunately the serious lapse in regulatory measures and violations contaminate habitat not to mention the economic liability pertaining to health care costs with sharp escalation in pulmonary ailments like respiratory problems viz. asthma commonly experienced among children and elders in society.

As long as rivers, mountains, sky and soil remain under relentless attack and abuse – for instance the subterranean nuclear testing ramifications are hardly a concern for political and military leaderships engaged in nuclear weapons enhancement.

Arguably the political and economic drive at planet’s peril is existential threat to humanity.

The industrialized nations together with emerging economies bear collective responsibility in eliminating toxicity produced through diverse agents and pollutants posing greater risks to all species and causing ecological imbalance that could ultimately breakdown food pyramid and disrupt natural cycle.

The special interests backed governments illogical stance in denying environment woes from reckless and counterproductive indulgence is an impediment to corrective remedies in altering climatic variations witnessed in many parts of the world.

The developing nations in particular made vulnerable to rapidly changing seasons summarily threatening survival.

Unless recognition on planet degradation with prompt solutions are implemented,

The rising sea levels behind melting ice caps or alternatively drought and famine in Africa and regions exposed to drastic deforestation including rain forests depletion in the Amazon, Latin America or Congo in Africa, Indonesia and New Guinea in the Asia Pacific create tremendous challenges for local population transforming original landscape to undesirable level.

India’s Jammu and Kashmir latest tragedy from floods is deeply regrettable.

Hopefully citizens and political leaderships precautionary planning and readiness would avert catastrophe in the future.

I offer my sincere condolence to mournful families and pray for solace and peace to the citizens in Jammu and Kashmir.

May God bless the people in Jammu and Kashmir enabling the healing process essential to overcome suffering.

Peace to all!

Thank you.

Philippines – Super Typhoon Haiyan

November 12, 2013

By Padmini Arhant

Philippines experiencing the worst environment problem through Super typhoon Haiyan deserves world attention in providing humanitarian assistance to the victims and international adherence to climate treaty in containing pollution and contamination affecting habitat and humanity.

The island nations are most vulnerable to severe weather conditions due to inadequate resources including technology to reach remote coastal areas and as a result they suffer from high death toll and population displacement.

Philippines braving recent storm and massive flooding immediate challenge is crises mitigation in delivering emergency aid to stranded residents in the marooned territories seeking basic requirements for survival.

Although various local and foreign relief organizations coordination could ease the burden in supplying essentials to people,

The national preparedness in the disaster prone zones involving safe relocation to shelters with necessary arrangements and capability to deal with calamity are critical to save lives and livestock limiting economic losses that often exceed anticipated outcome.

Again insufficiency in this regard exacerbate human suffering producing more casualties and damages otherwise averted with advance warnings for evacuation and response measures preventing irreversible situations related to life and recovery process.

The global pledge to assist developing nations with modern mechanisms and relevant capacity during UN climate conference merely remaining an agreement not translated into actions also contributes to status quo in the Philippines and elsewhere.

World priority is to address environmental issues beginning with clean air and water that are increasingly becoming a rare commodity considering significant number of inhabitants across the globe are deprived of these sources despite the natural elements abundance on earth.

UN conventions such as COP 15, COP 16 and COP 17… are consistently met with non-cooperation from prominent polluters declining to share responsibility even though they are liable for more than half of environment abuse in the domestic and offshore locations attributed to strategies focused on optimizing profitability at vast majority expense.

The governments unwillingness and lack of political will to implement environment standards for energy, defense and agriculture industry – arguably the dominant forces among conglomerate running political system in industrialized nations continue with serious environment violations worldwide in the absence of any accountability.

Human efforts to abandon detrimental pursuits and practices based on events recurrence with pervasive impact would be initial recognition of planet protection for entire world rather than selective privileged society.

The culmination of warfare comprising bombings, explosions and drone attacks leaving debris on the ground and pollutants in the surroundings not to mention the major powers underwater nuclear testing or missile launch to enhance offensive status represents existential threat to life existence and sustenance.

The mass awakening to reverse destructive trend leading to ozone depletion and sea level rising pertinent to offset potential harm to atmosphere conspicuous in the latest environmental hazards causing ecological imbalance that would ultimately delink the food chain obstructing bio-diversity.

There is urgent need for universal compliance on environment laws barring exceptions and commitment to preserve nature from persistent abrasive profiteering policy that ignores the essence of healthy living reflective in holistic approach and appreciation of life as a gift to mankind.

Sincere condolences offered to bereaved families and survivors struggling to cope with unprecedented difficulties from Typhoon Haiyen in the Philippines.

Global citizens are urged to come forward with generous donations in expediting rescue operations for the distressed in the archipelago.

May God’s blessings alleviate Philippines plight now and in the future.

Peace to all!

Thank you.

Brazil – Rio+20 Summit on Sustainable Development

June 22, 2012

By Padmini Arhant

Pleasant Greetings! To Rio de Janeiro, Brazil hosting UN summit on sustainable development.

The environment goals are far from being reached predominantly due to constraints by political and economic leaderships prioritizing profits at any costs ignoring irreversible damages in the process.

Climate talks may not be interpreted into action at the national level.

However, there is a glimpse of hope with citizens and community leaderships at grassroots level striving hard to contain global warming.

In fact, independent investigation reveals many cities in different parts of the world are engaged in environment pursuits by passing ordinances and laws through local municipality then adopted by state legislation for uniformity in experiencing positive growth.

For instance on personal accounts – plastic bags are banned in the city and customers bring own reusable cloth material bags or purchase recycled paper bags and biodegradable choices at nominal price.

The neighboring states could then be influenced to apply same standards beneficial to their residents and innovate methods enhancing results in projects while remaining cost effective.

Such incremental steps are encouraging and could essentially serve as the prototype for world over besides bypassing political wrangling and lobbyists pressure on legislating environment issue.

The controversy over carbon tax or rebates and C02 emission reduction challenged as counterproductive to ecological balance based on plants absorption of carbon di oxide and oxygen release in return for life survival.

The logic would prevail provided the rainforests are intact devoid of deforestation and carbon trapped in the atmosphere contributing to ozone layer depletion and greenhouse effects along with,

Rivers and oceans spared from over fishing, hydrofracking aka hydraulic fracturing – a technique used in gas exploration and the most detrimental oil drilling despite devastation on coastal life and all around.

Nuclear plants exacerbate problems with recent radiation leaks from Fukushima, Japan and San Juan Capistrano,California after San Onofre in the state was closed earlier this year.

Clean energy – solar, wind and hydropower could effectively replace fossil fuel and nuclear power on consumer demand in market economy.

Small entrepreneurs among educated youth with novel ideas utilizing solar, wind and hydro base could design and develop products for rural and urban lower income category given the urgent need in the particular economic strata.

The coal, oil and nuclear industry domineering the sector have successfully stifled energy manufacturing from natural elements in industrialized and developing nations although some countries have pursued nonetheless and made alternative energy not only affordable but also achieved a smooth transition as the primary source.

In the sustainable development concept – the focus on broad range of environmental factors directly related to human suffering is vital beginning with safe drinking water supply to the entire population, sanitation and sewage system and organic farming rejecting GMO (Genetically modified organism) agriculture.

These three fundamental provisions among diverse requirements would address disease, hunger and poverty widespread in significant world population.

Normal conditions would facilitate improvement in literacy rate and opportunity for the marginalized and disenfranchised demography in society.

The burgeoning health care expenses would also substantially decline when basic necessities made easily available for vast majority across the globe.

Healthy environment means better lifestyle prolonging longevity and increased productivity benefitting all.

Water shortage is a major struggle for city and country folks with regional and international disputes on aqua sharing prevalent in the modern era.

Public are in strife having to deal with odd preferences – Often bureaucracy and corruption undermine service in utilities under state ownership.

On the flip side – private management of water resources overwhelmingly concentrate on profiteering compromising quality not excluding external powers vying for total control.

Furthermore, infrastructure modernization and transportation access with regular road repairs would optimize functionality and industrial output.

The investments could be recovered from business ventures and tourism that would follow in maintaining convenient and appealing landscape.

Technology oriented applications in rural planning and urbanization could save time and money in the slow economy.

Financial commitment and relevant expertise is imperative for successful completion of any undertaking.

Sustainable development is largely dependent upon strong foundation supported by ingenuity and flexibility to remodel in the progressive trend.

At the conference, Palestinian citizens request for recognition as sovereign member in semblance to status granted by UNESCO merits acknowledgment with full honor from international body like United Nations exemplifying inclusivity in the global village.

With due recognition to host nation Brazil and UN for organizing the important event,

Best Wishes to all members on environment and humanitarian mission protecting the only habitat for mankind.

Peace to all!

Thank you.

Global Climate Change Treaty – GCCT

December 16, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

United Nations – COP 17, CMP 7, 2011 Durban, South Africa

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) guided 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) and 7th Session of the Conference / Meeting of the Parties on Kyoto Protocol hosted by sunny Durban, South Africa has taken incremental measure to set up Ad Hoc committee on Durban Platform for a global agreement by 2015.

Last COP 16 summit in Cancun, Mexico – consensus reached on the immediate recognition of the deteriorating global environment and nations with huge energy demands were requested to assume greater responsibility to avert the prevalent risk of global temperature above 3°C expected to rise between 3.5 – 4.0°C by 2100.

Accordingly, in Durban the emerging economies – China and India acceptance to a binding legal accord due by 2015 is noteworthy.

International binding agreement in early 2012 instead of 2015 could be prudent for global environment and economy considering severe weather conditions.

Juxtaposed United States identified as the second largest emitter is yet to oblige in cutting back carbon emissions required for the targeted goal below 1.5°C – critical for planet sustenance including island nations as well as least developed countries survival.

Similarly European Union unconditional commitment currently regarded inadequate could be aimed at 40 – 45% reduction for a meaningful trajectory in containing global warming.

Kyoto Protocol first commitment period i.e. 2008 – 2012 considered for renewal next year would be more effective upon elimination of land use, land use change and forestry credits (LULUCF) availed by industrialized and developing nations to offset higher percentage Green House Gas limitation.

The existing treaty with loopholes reverse the trend in carbon control and closing the surplus assigned amount units (AAU’s) would secure emission decrease allowing the target attainable within timeframe.

Further more unanimous ratification of the second commitment period 2013 – 2017 beginning with United States and other non-committal states is imperative to distribute burden linked to maximum pollution factor.

Other provisions in the treaty could be thoroughly reviewed and necessary amendments made for optimal benefit.

Scientific facts on emissions in relation to present policy continuation combined with United States, EU, Middle East and other nations ambiguous positions pose imminent danger to planet life.

The global emission projection for 2020 under same policies is 57 billion tons of greenhouse gas and the noted safe levels are below 40 billion tons globally to maintain lower than 1.5°C  – the absolute temperature for life support and nourishment.

Hence the excess 17 billion tons greenhouse gas removal by 2020 would rehabilitate life – the primary focus for world society.

Actions differed on emission mitigation by developed and developing nations generally mean increased costs and catastrophic damage to the environment.

Over 3°C warming under current practice has the following impact:

Rainforests depletion,

Arctic temperature rising from melting icecaps,

Ozone layer vulnerability and,

Coral reefs and oceanic life exposed to irreversible loss endangering ecosystem.

The financial commitments in adapting to rapid climate change with extreme weather  would be phenomenal and for least developed countries – a potential threat to existence.

Adverse economic effects on West Africa and South Asia alone is estimated around 3- 5% of combined GDP in the region even at 2°C warming and 5 -6% for the prevailing 3°C reading.

The costs would proportionately decline to lower warming temperature – neutralized at pre-industrial setting i.e. lower than 1.5°C.

Governments’ willingness for a global legal climate pact is a positive step forward in the recent Durban meeting.

Nonetheless, the outcome is devoid of ambitious plans in emissions restriction with no new pledges from the participants especially the prominent emitters engaged in expansive detrimental energy policy.

With options available to bridge the gap between contemporary passivity and result-oriented activity –

The developed or industrialized nations concerted action for 45% emission contraction against the present norm – 11-19% of which,

Various applied credits further degrades emission percentage to bare minimum diminishing the prospects for the safe upper limit in CO2 release – 1.5°C or 350 ppm (Parts Per Million).

Governments’ inaction or slower pace involvement would lead to faster degeneration of the fragile ecological equilibrium.

Developing nations with moderate economic growth could begin with 30 – 40% and gradually elevating to 45% emission constraints in semblance to developed nations category.

Island nations and least developed countries (LDC) would require financial and technical assistance to meet with environmental demands and responsibility in adhering to the specified range such as 20 – 40% and subsequently moving up to 45% in emission control.

Global monitoring by independent committee or non-profit organization tracking to ensure international collaboration would guarantee transparency and accountability on emission compliance.

Among diverse methods to decelerate global warming the hindrances to progress deserves attention with appropriate alternatives to resolve the burgeoning crises.

Energy policy – Industrialized and developing nations dependency on fossil fuel and nuclear power is predominantly responsible for the status quo.

Despite continuous cataclysmic events from –

Offshore and shallow water oil drilling,

Coal mining accidents and,

Nuclear power plant radiation leaks taking toll on human lives, economy and environment,

The economic and political leaderships remain defiant in heeding Mother Nature’s warning and inherent operational risks slighted for profits.

Industrial pollution with chemical deposits and carcinogens in wellspring and surroundings proved fatal affecting vulnerable demography.

International aviation and marine (shipping) CO2 emissions generate greenhouse gas at an alarming rate that needs to be curtailed yielding 1 billion tons in reaching the milestone.

Afforestation, national parks and rain forests are substantial in the conservation process

However, implementation without infringement upon aborigine lives and natural reserves would win unity – vital to expedite target achievement – 1.5°C or 350ppm.

Brazil and Indonesia response in this respect is praiseworthy.   The record maintenance and consistent improvement would deliver carbon neutrality.

Australia with pressure from politically active Green Party is environment conscious in the domestic front but,

Regrettably not reflected in trade practice with rising world markets – banning coal shipment to China and uranium supply to India would exemplify reliability.

Israel and China broadening investments in solar energy define the future in safe natural source.

Humanity’s common woes are political dysfunctionality, economic inequality, social injustice and environment degradation.

United States as the major polluter is on regression path in meeting environmental objectives with key congressional members determined to abolish environment protection agency (EPA) – the regulatory authority viewed a menace to fossil fuel industry.

The energy behemoths sponsored representatives aim at slashing funds for myriad environmental causes vigorously campaigning to drill, mine and nuclearize the delicate landscape.

Adjacently incessant warfare tied to economic gains under the pretext of spreading democracy with the so-called war on terror being the by-product is the principal cause for human suffering.

Wars in different parts of the world using depleted uranium, toxic chemicals, white phosphorous…has precipitated acid rain,

Not to mention the prolonged use of weaponry and explosives polluting air, water and land.

Unless and until wars desist creating an opportunity to rebuild nations,

Clean air and drinking water – the fundamental life sources remain increasingly scarce with unaffordable price tag for the vast majority.

With different industries and global organizations agenda dominating United Nations conference,

The significant world population input overshadowed during talks merely serving the powerful interests.

Efforts for financial aid to island nations and least developed countries (LDC) through Green Climate Fund (GCF) create a perception among global warming victims as Greed Corporate Fund.

Green Climate Fund proposal for $100 billion annually from industrialized nations viz. U.S, Israel, Japan, EU and developing economies like China, India, Brazil, and Russia,

Not withstanding oil rich regions – the Middle East are unclear in terms of individual contribution leading to uncertainties in the environment rescue plan.

Appropriating sizeable percentage of national GDP towards environment protection and enrichment including donations to global partners in dealing with growing climate problems would alleviate humanity plight.

Climate Fund Management is another contentious issue given the quantum for diverse disbursements urging fiscal and ethical responsibility.

Global monetary authority with regional representation selected by the people from autonomous functioning body known for efficiency and integrity in the respective domain rather than World Bank or IMF would meet the criteria.

The international commission subjected to external audit could be the impetus enhancing performance in the relevant activity.

It is imperative to address demographic grievances on a range of issues from technology, agriculture, REDD + Forest carbon ventures, Green economy to climate debt and justice.

Technology – Patented technology often more expensive than generic brand diluting competition in the market.

Technological impact in relevant context – social, cultural and environmental dimensions outweigh the anticipated outcome with profitability substituting viability.

Marketing technological tools – nanotechnology, geo-engineering technology and synthetic biology are evidently counterproductive exacerbating sea level elevation.

Agriculture – Agro-ecological solutions adapting to organic mechanisms against agrochemicals, genetic modification and climate smart agriculture proven overwhelmingly positive to the environment and farming community worldwide.

Likewise modifying Free Trade into Fair Trade Agreements,

Voiding Association Agreements and reassessment of Intellectual Property Rights to life enforcements on technological supplies would salvage struggling agro-based economies for self-sufficiency and greater productivity leading to commodity export.

REDD + Forest carbon ventures – Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation

The initiative from the coalition of rainforest nations with members Costa Rica and Papua New Guinea request to industrialized nations has been diametrically transformed with World Bank and UN interjected forest carbon projects.

The program is hostile to indigenous population and forest dependent segments.

It also violates individual rights along with massive displacements from native dwelling.

Not barring systemic destruction of biodiversity and cultural uniqueness inducing social discord.

Additionally, International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and European Union endorsement of REDD + jeopardize the purpose behind conservation and rainforests preservation with logging depleting natural resource.

Honoring indigenous groups, farmers and local citizens legitimate positions based on adversity from disguised business strategies is poignant for constructive course towards saving environment.

Green Economy Through economics guided profits and carbon markets facilitated lucrative financial investments,

The climate agreements have evolved into exploitative bonanza to transnational corporations represented by industrialized nations silencing the actual victims in the environmental deal.

Life matters – the concept ominously missing in the aggressive economic pursuits.

Commercializing survival elements that are freely and naturally provided confirms the profit motivated scheme superseding realistic environment goals.

Calamity anywhere is causative liability everywhere.

Climate Debt – Industrialized nations built on other sovereign nations’ wealth in the form of oil, coal and planet minerals arguably obligatory to repair, restore and rebuild environment via rigorous emission reduction, carnage compensation and finance developing countries transfer to clean energy system.

Enactment of valuable recommendations from World People’s Conference on Climate Change – Cochabamba, Bolivia in April 2010 comprising –

World People’s Referendum on Climate Change,

Universal Declaration on the Rights of Mother Earth and,

The establishment of a Climate Justice Tribunal –

Could advance and strengthen climate treaty in nurturing the precious environment – the only habitat for all species.

Optimistic new beginning lies with inhabitants crusade to stop air pollution, water contamination and land expropriation.

Please save the planet and celebrate life.

Peace on Earth and,

Peace to all!

Thank you.

Hydrofracking – Endangering Life and Environment

April 19, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

Despite oil spills, mining accidents, gas and nuclear power plant leakages proved catastrophic to life on planet, the exploration continues in defiance of environment laws further endangering lives and livelihoods.

Congressional Democrats investigation revealed the drilling process known as hydrofracking i.e. hydraulic fracking – an operation carried out by the oil and gas industry injecting toxic chemicals into underground bedrocks to extract petroleum and gas is a direct threat to the natural sources of drinking water.

The findings also suggest that the water contamination from the several million gallons of heavily concentrated hazardous chemicals used in the wells is a serious health concern and portends major risks for residents in more than thirteen states across the nation.

Oil companies’ discreet policies and reluctance in complete public disclosure on the chemicals poured in substantial volumes is a greater challenge in identifying the exact chemical compounds presenting an imminent danger to life.

The hydrofracking companies hired by the energy industry are evidently in violation of the safe drinking water act due to the pervasive carcinogenic effects from the harmful agents such as benzene and lead in massive quantities for fossil fuel production.

Democrat lawmakers’ report is an awakening for setting rigorous standards calling for ban on hydrofracking given the devastating impact on water supply and the residue settlements on the wastewater treatment plant for redistribution into the rivers.

With the BP oil spill anniversary on April 20, 2011 it is poignant to recall the irreparable damages caused by the biggest environment disaster yet to be contained in various fronts and,

The subsequent permits issued by the federal agency not to mention the moratorium on offshore drilling lifted even prior to addressing the environmental and economic losses from the negligence as well as delayed action in plugging the hole.

As for the energy industry assuming responsibility in preventing environment degradation –

Unfortunately prolific investments are made in maintaining the status quo and any political efforts in passing legislation successfully derailed through representatives against environment preservation.

These impediments combined with persistent environment abuse prevalent in the exploration techniques contribute to pollution thereby increasing health problems.

Hydofracking is obviously detrimental to health and environment.

The elimination of such dangerous methods is essential to safeguard life and only possible through mass intervention seeking legislative prohibition along with granting authority to EPA in monitoring the abandonment of drilling to sustain purity in natural elements like water.

Clean air and safe drinking water are fundamental requirements for survival and adversely affected by untested and unverifiable applications depleting the vital reserves in the quest for energy fuel.

Affordable alternative energy from solar, wind, water and biofuel are the best hope to meet the growing energy demands across the globe besides providing healthy living conditions for all inhabitants.

Finally sparing Mother Earth from systemic assaults on air, land and water would guarantee the desirable results in promoting life, abundance growth and fair distribution of resources among the nations currently deprived from such access.

Ending hydrofracking and offshore drilling would be choosing to save life over greed driven profits.

Thank you.

Nuclear Reactor Leakage in Fukushima Power Plant

March 12, 2011

By Padmini Arhant

Japan declared nuclear emergency upon one of the five nuclear reactors explosion in the Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) operated power plant in Fukushima about 240 Km or 150 miles north of Tokyo.

It is a matter of grave concern considering the radiation leakage impact with news report on three citizens having been exposed despite the evacuation from the area in close proximity.

Nuclear energy being vigorously pursued regardless of safety issues poses a major threat to humanity.

Besides the civil nuclear program inevitably leading to nuclear arsenal status is predominantly responsible for the nuclear arms race not to mention the rhetoric on global warfare to deter one nation while entering into agreement with others thereby promoting defiance in the contentious nuclear armament.

Even with Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and yet to be implemented Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty (FMCT) the radioactive material storage and disposal arrangements or the lack thereof endanger life on the planet.

On FMCT – the UN General Assembly passed resolution (48/75L) in December 1993 for a comprehensive ban on fissile material production along side the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) monitoring and verification.

Then the Conference on Disarmament (CD) in March 1995 enacted the UN General Assembly resolution (48/75L) and agreed to mandate cut-off treaty negotiations through Ad Hoc Committee.

Subsequently in May 1995, the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) during review meeting had called to expedite FMCT given the international support in this regard.

However, the Conference on Disarmament (CD) unable to act without general consensus on FMCT has been forced to retreat due to the impediment in combining FMCT with other nuclear disarmament issues contributing to the status quo.

Further in 1998 – apart from the CD reaction to India and Pakistan nuclear testing, the progress in the FMCT measure effectively taking stock of nuclear production to non-proliferation is hindered by the nuclear powers’ double standards creating a hierarchy detrimental to disarmament efforts.

Previously Chernobyl and now Fukushima nuclear blast is a grim reminder to accept the facts on the serious ramifications of nuclear site management when subject to unpredictable catastrophic events. It can no longer be dismissed as sporadic occurrence especially with the generational ill effects evident in the health and environmental degradation.

It is time for global commitment towards complete nuclear disarmament without exception to protect life and maintain planet sustenance increasingly under attack on land, air and water.

Thus far the nuclear industry, coal mining and oil companies have successfully led the continuation of environmental abuse under the pretext of high energy demand suppressing the alternative sources like solar, wind and hydro power emergence in the mainstream utility supply presently unaffordable with unreasonable constraints such as ten year contract in addition to government rebates benefitting the solar companies than the average consumer.

Exorbitant profit margin takes precedence in the free market lacking competition to curb the essential commodity price experienced in the energy sector.

Shifting focus on Japan’s nuclear contamination – the emergency stop-gap on the Fukushima power plant reactor has not effectively addressed the damage from the devastating earthquake and tsunami leaving the residents vulnerable to potential health problems.

The world has an opportunity to abandon policies proved cataclysmic to life on earth and instead adopt a rational approach in the energy consumption arguably instrumental in the contemporary wars notwithstanding complacency to brutality resulting in human annihilation in Libya and oil rich nations confronting political uprising.

Japan is faced with a huge humanitarian crisis deserving universal empathy and formidable action at the nuclear front and planet preservation.

International community could set the FMCT in motion and conscientiously engage in nuclear disarmament to honor life and the humanity’s only habitat.

Keeping the worst affected citizens in the northeastern region of Sendai in the Miyagi Prefecture in thoughts and prayers – wishing the people of Japan renewed strength to rise again like the glorious Sun.

Thank you.

Environment Protection and Endangered Species Act

December 29, 2010

By Padmini Arhant

United States pledge to contain carbon emission and enact effective environmental laws in accordance with global objectives at the 2010 COP16 Cancun summit is now challenged by energy sector promoted new bills that violates the existing laws and threatens life sustenance.

The Environment Protection Agency’s postponement of rigorous emission standards on smog and toxic pollution is capitulation to energy industry defiance jeopardizing the clean air requirement for survival.

In this context EPA declaration to adopt California rule as national policy was much anticipated to combat air pollution proved to be directly related to serious respiratory and various other illnesses affecting the vast majority – the children and seniors in particular.

Therefore delivering the intent through verifiable action would confirm EPA role as the legitimate regulatory authority living up to the reputation to ‘protect’ the environment against any opposition.

Similarly the federal agency as the oversight for U.S. oil and gas exploration is preparing to allow Shell Oil company to drill for oil in the Arctic nearing summer.

After the worst environment disasters from BP oil spills in the Gulf coast the federal agency consideration to grant permission for drilling is disappointing especially with the responsibility to safeguard national environment.

It also confirms energy companies’ dominance over the governing power.

The energy sector monopoly in striking against environmental measures is fostered by the entities prioritizing self and special interests over national interest.

Any negative consequences affecting the inhabitants such as BP oil catastrophe is neglected in the profit oriented scheme.

When mistakes are repeated despite the inevitable harmful effects then they are intentional to serve individual purpose at the humanity’s detriment.

The energy corporations’ reluctance to transform from fossil fuel use towards renewable energy viz. solar, wind, hydroelectric and biofuel…is a major impediment in the international environment goals.

Furthermore, the dismissal of CO2 factor in global warming during the committee hearing on climate change is denial of the present reality i.e. the extreme weather conditions like freezing temperatures, drought, floods, tsunami, hurricane, tornadoes etc. experienced by the world population.

Somehow subversion of facts prevails over hard core evidences in climate debate enabling polluters to accelerate destructive operations regardless of the devastating results.

It has come to light that the Bureau of Land Management has proposed a 1,000-acre timber sale in the heart of old-growth forest vital to the spotted owl.

This issue is relevant to deforestation contributing to greenhouse gases and again vehemently rejected by the industries engaged in depleting natural resources essential for ecological balance.

Life species that were once statistically well represented are increasingly becoming part of the endangered species due to reckless utilization of the planet’s natural substances.

Mankind failure to respect the environment relied upon by myriad sources providing lifeline support to human existence is best characterized as kamikaze indulgence for materialistic gains.

United States bears greater responsibility given the enormous energy consumption while ranked second following China in atmospheric contamination.

Hence the elected officials entrusted with power by the people are urged to exercise diligence in the approval of the energy sector activities decisively focused on generating personal wealth at the environment degradation.

Planet earth is the natural habitat for infinite life and the energy industry’s egregious engagement in the assault on air, land and water leading to the status quo can no longer be ignored with political rhetoric claiming climate change a ‘myth’ – an irresponsible stance precipitating the environment decline.

However, the powerful energy industries refutation in this matter could be countered with citizens’ collective response through their Congressional representatives at any time. Please call the lawmakers and request them to end the environmental damages caused by energy industry’s adverse strategies.

Public participation in legislation and governance is paramount for it can produce the desirable outcome that guarantees planet preservation.

Unity is the indomitable force in defending mother nature.

Please Save the Planet – the only shelter and a precious gift to humanity.

Thank you.
